If you are planning to renovate your cellar into a living space then you are probably aware that the windows you have are too small to make a difference. Many people do not mind an enclosed space if it is well lit, but most people appreciate a window to the outside world or at least the illusion of one.
Since the cellar concrete block walls have to be covered with sheet rock, it presents a perfect opportunity to create a window with daylight streaming into the room. By placing the wall two feet into the room, the space can be used for a niche, storage cabinets, book shelves and a window. As for losing two feet of room space, the inset can be configured to square off a too long room and the convenience of extra storage space is important. The space behind the wall makes it easy to run electric wiring, speaker wires and telephone connections.
A standard sash window can be used or better, a diamond paned picture window. Provision must be made to be able to enter the space for maintenance. To the left and right of the window, two double tube florescent fixtures with special daylight balanced tubes will shine on a curved panel of thin sheet rock. The top third of the reflecting panel can be painted a light sky blue and the lower two thirds a pale grass green. Creative types may consider painting a garden scene or a quiet lake view.
As an alternative to plain glass panes, stained glass or plastic patterned panels can be inserted behind the glass for a more decorative look. A dimmer switch can be mounted on the wall for ambiance lighting. Your new window will serve as a focal point for your new basement room, lending a a cozy atmosphere just as a fireplace does in your family room.
