Fabric Window Treatment Ideas

This article will present a few fabric window treatment ideas that you might want to use as you cover your house up and put the drapes on. You can also use these ideas as the take-off point for your own ideas in improving your window treatment.

If your house has a low ceiling and few windows, do not use velvet or other heavy drapery, as they can increase your cooling bill. Use such drapes in the winter, but stash them away and put on the sheer curtains during the summer or spring months. You can also layer your curtains: put lace over cotton, to create a cottage, down-home feel; or place veil over glossy material to imitate a bridal gown.

If you cannot afford heavy drapes but still want color in your window, then add stained glass panels to your window, or hang up stained glass chimes. These can change the color of the light coming into your home, and can add to the appeal of your windows.

You can also innovate on the different ways to tie your drapes: tie them with different colored ribbons, or place dried flowers in your knots. Hang on braided fabrics to the edges or knots in your curtain. If your house is made up of cool stone or brick, you can turn your home into a castle by hanging up brocade or velvet curtains with embroidery.

These are only a few fabric window treatment ideas that you can use, so be creative and adventurous, and add accessories or decorations where you like. If you have heavy drapes, do not overdo your set-up, and instead let the design of your fabrics stand on their own. If you want to use thin, simple, or sheer drapes, however, you can add decorations, but make sure that they do not make the window appear too over-laden with accessories.

Do not settle for only one or two fabric window treatment ideas to decorate your window for the next three years. Innovate constantly, and make sure that you get your drapes washed regularly. You can have a pretty window in no time, with the best fabrics showing off your interests and style.

Step 3. Open up the sewn panel and press the seams open. Press well

Step 5. Press the folded edge

Step 6. Sew in 5/8" from the folded edge enclosing the raw edges of the 3/8" seam

If you find out that your car window has been broken, you can go to a nearby auto shop and ask if they have a replacement in stock. If you are successful in your search, then you can begin the process of replacing your car window. The first step is to make sure that you have the appropriate tools for the project. You will usually need a wide selection of hand tools, a tarp, a repair manual and a vacuum. The next thing to do is to safely remove the door panel of your car door and once you’ve found a plastic sheet under the panel, you can slowly peel it. You will probably see the pieces of glass from your old car window, remove those safely using gloves and your vacuum cleaner.

Putting in the glass

The next step is to fit in the new window through the two-inch wide slot located on the top of the door panel. This step can prove tricky because fitting in the glass may require that you unbolt some bolts on the door panel to provide more space for the fitting of the glass. Your repair manuals will come in very handy in this particular step. The repair manual will also show you the placement of the bracket and clips that were bonded to the glass. The next step is to make sure that the glass is aligned after you replace the bracket bolts and the weather-stripping on the door panel. After this, get the door panel back and align it to the window crank lever and test your new car window.

Doing repairs yourself can prove to be a tricky task, that is why repair manuals and a small amount of experience can come in handy in minor repair jobs such as the replacement of your car window.

The Beauty Of Sheer Window Treatments

Sheer window treatments have always been a favorite among homemakers and stylish interior designs. The main reason is that it is able to provide privacy without compromising light and structure. Sheer window treatments appear very lightweight and captivating at the same time. Here are some tips and tricks on how to properly design your windows.

Sheer window curtains are great when used alone since it creates a very warm and relaxing effect allowing a lot of light in through your windows. If you want to add more detail, you can use sheer curtain panels together with panel curtains or pinch pleated drapes. This will look more classic and sophisticated but still allows a lot of light which balances everything.

Plain white sheer fabric is one of the most commonly used items although you also have other choices like woven patterns and other plain colors. The colors and patterns you choose should always be consistent with your main room theme. Light and pastel colors are recommended for smaller rooms while others can experiment with bold and darker hues if they have larger rooms and taller windows.

Sheer panels, sheer valances, sheer Priscilla window curtains and sheer scarf curtain are other great alternative treatments. Sheer panel curtains are ideal for French windows or single-door windows. Sheer valances are available in simple plain colors as well as woven patterns. Valances along with scarf window treatments look very nice in country themed living rooms and bedrooms. It provides a warming effect due to the nice input of light from the outside. More detailed treatments would involve sheer fabric ruffled Priscilla. These are available in various mixed tones and colors.

Sheer curtains can compliment heavy drapes as well. There are various new fabrics, designs and patterns of sheer available such as cotton, linen, silk, wool and lace. Some even come with beads, embroidery and metallic threading. When combined with draperies, sheer will help balance the heavy aura. This type of style is usually preferred in very large dining room areas and living rooms with very tall windows. Without draperies, sheers will create a gossamer style with a fusion of modern and contemporary design.

Window Curtains Help With Adding More Privacy To Your Home

Make Your Home Elegant With Curtains:

To put together the window curtains which you have preferred look astonishing there are different treatments you can use. These treatments will all have need of various fittings. You can use a style called pinch pleats and tabs. This style is used to mainly dress up a room. Another style which looks elegant is that of the ruffled look. Even though you see this type of window treatment in girl's rooms, it can be used all the way through your home.

You should judge the most appropriate length for your curtains. Some can sit just above the window sill, giving the impression of fitting neatly into the window space. These are ideal when you have a radiator under the window, so you don't lose all the heat up through the window behind the curtain. If you want your ended to rest just below the window ledge, be sure your curtain pole is mounted far enough from the wall to ensure that curtain can hang freely and does not touch the window sill. Floor length curtains should finish just before the floor so they don't drag. If they touch the floor they will become soiled very quickly and may be stood on and ripped.

If the window looks onto streets or sidewalks, then curtains can be used for privacy. Translucent curtains like net curtains or sheer curtains will only block sunlight partially. These types of curtains do not provide any privacy, especially at night. For privacy opaque curtains are better.

The Effect of Curtains as Window Treatments

You can dramatically alter your windows by adding different types of fabric and colors. You can also easily alter them in the way that you hang your curtains. During your home design, or re-design you’ll find a lot of unique ways to change the look of your home, and using the windows as a starting point, at least for planning can be a tremendous idea.

As well the way you use tiebacks for curtains and drapes have a lot to do with the way your windows look.

The most usual positions for the tie back are the middle tie, the center tie, the high tie, the crisscross tie and the low tie.

When you use the high tie you’re hanging either one or two panels on the window up above the center point of the windows height.

When using the middle tie you’re pulling the panels back to the point nearer to the middle of the curtain. Usually the best affect is to tie back at the exact center point.

If you’re looking to do the low tie, then you’ll be pulling the curtain back about ¾ of the distance from the top of the floor.

Now the center tie is a bit different in that it gathers either one or two curtains and then proceeds to bind them together at the vertical center of the window, and this is about 2/3 or ¾ of the distance from the bottom to the top.

There’s also the crisscross tie that starts with two overlapping panels that hang the full width of the window. You’ll be pulling the outer panel back to one side, and then the inner curtain is pulled to the opposite side.

Curtains are a varied aspect of the homes interior and can come all different types and styles. One of the ways that all types of curtains are classified is either as informal or formal, no matter the length or color of the fabric.

The more formal type of window is often called a drapery, and will be hung in layers. These are usually found in sitting rooms or living rooms of the home, as well as formal dining rooms. The formal treatments are usually made in two to three layers. The first of the layers is what’s known as the sheer, which is usually a single layered sheer linen or lace, and this will usually let in a diffused amount of light into the room. This layer usually is meant to make murky the visibility from outside.

Next is the pleated floor length drapes. These are hung from a traverse rod, and are meant to cover the side casing and trim of the window frame. Next is the valance that runs along the top of the window, usually only covering a small portion of the window from the top down.

Anything else is just an informal curtain, which are usually just a one or two layer type of window covering, which are meant to be mostly functional, with some decorative style as well, and to simply diffuse the sunlight, not to block it out all together like many drapes.

Window Shutters On A Budget

While there is great value in installing custom-made interior wood window shutters, sometimes they are still too expensive for certain applications. Some alternatives – including poly or vinyl shutters – are less expensive but also much less attractive. For a high-quality solution at a lower cost, look for a company that sells individual solid wood shutter panels that can be installed in any configuration.

When shopping for individual shutter panels, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. The most important factor is the material used to make the interior shutter panels. Basswood has the best characteristics for window shutters because it is a very straight hard wood with little distortion. Basswood also has a fine, uniform texture and indistinct grain, which make it superior for staining or painting. You should also look for a company that can make a large number of panel sizes so you can receive the best final fit for your window.

How To Determine Individual Panel Sizes to Order

It is best to determine how you will mount your shutters before ordering the shutter panels. Sometimes it is necessary to use hanging strips to attach shutters to the outside of the window opening. A reputable company will provide information about different installation methods so you can determine how best to install on a specific window.

Width:
Measure the width of the area you want the shutters to cover (NOT including any trim strips).

1. Divide this width by the number of panels you want across the window. This will give you the approximate width of each panel. Round this measurement up to the nearest 1/4 inch.

Example:
Width = 36-7/16"
Divide by 4 and round up to nearest 1/4"
Order (4) shutter panels 9-1/4" wide

Height:
Up to 1" may be trimmed off the top and the bottom of each individual panel (a total of 2" per panel).

1. For a two tier unit (panels across the top and bottom), combine individual panel heights as required.

Finishing
A high-quality wood shutter panel can be painted or stained to a beautiful finish. Even if the shutters arrive and seem fairly smooth, a light sanding is advised before beginning the finishing process. After sanding and brushing off any dust, primer and paint can be applied. Often a more smooth finish is achieved by spraying the primer and paint, although the use of a high-quality brush can also result in a nice finish. When staining, follow the instructions given by the stain manufacturer. The stain manufacturer may recommend applying a wood conditioner before staining in order to ensure even stain color penetration.

Once your shutters are finished and installed, you will have a high-quality product that will increase the value of your home at a fraction of the cost of custom-made shutters.

ShutterLand Interior Shutters provides solid wood interior window shutters sold as individual shutter panels. Interior window shutters come unfinished, ready to paint or stain. Plantation and traditional style shutters are manufactured direct in hundreds of sizes, sold at a discount, and shipped quickly nationwide.

How Curtains Can Change the Look of Your Home

The roles of curtains have changed. At one time they were used to retain heat, block cold air, control sunlight and provide privacy. They still perform these roles, but with the many advancements in window glass and window design technology, they are often much more decorative than functional. Decorators can be much more creative in their window treatments with this shift to the decorative usage.

For many people, there is a distinction between the terms curtains and drapes. Drapes are usually floor length, lined and suspended from a traverse rod with hooks that will allow them to be opened and closed by pulling a cord. Draperies are usually very formal looking. Curtains are less formal. They are usually those fabric window treatments that are suspended by hooks or rings from a rod and opened and closed by grasping the edge and pulling the fabric panel into position. Often they are tied back to the window casing and are not opened or closed at all. In these situations, they are frequently used in conjunction with shades, or blinds which can be closed to block sunlight or provide privacy.

Types of curtains

There are three basic types of curtains. These are the panel, the cafe and tiered. Panel are simply plain panels of fabric that are hemmed at the top and at the bottom. They are suspended from the top of the window by rings or hooks and hang in natural folds, giving the window a less formal appearance. These are often used in bedrooms and dining rooms and maybe used in combination with shades, blinds or sheers. Cafe curtains are generally hung from the center of the window, leaving the upper part of the window bare or exposed. Sometimes the cafe styles will be hung one fourth or one third of the way down from the top of the window, giving the window a much different look. Either way, they are tied back. Cafe curtains are often used in kitchens and in informal dining areas. The third kind is the tiered. These are multiple panels with one or two panels hanging over the top of the two base panels. The base panels usually cover the bottom half of the window and the outer panels cover the top half of the window and hang down to overlap the base panels.

There are three basic lengths as well. The sill length is either suspended from either the halfway point or the top of the window. The bottom hem is not quite touching the windowsill. The below the sill style is cut so the bottom hem hangs just below the apron or trim board running across the bottom of the window. The floor length style is cut so the bottom hem is just above the floor.

There are also be lined or unlined styles, depending upon the amount of natural light that is to be admitted to the room. Similarly, there are interlined styles, with a third layer sandwiched between the panel and the lining. They are designed to provide protection from cold air that is conducted from the outside to the inside through the glass, or air seeping through cracks in the windowsill or between the sash and the window frame.

Tie back styles

The appearance of a window can be dramatically altered by the colour and fabric used. It can also be altered in the manner the curtains are hung. One popular and attractive arrangement is the tie back. Tie back options offer decorators tremendous choices in creating unique and very attractive windows.

The most popular tie back positions are the high tie, the middle tie, the low tie, the centre tie, the crisscrossed tie and the angled double tie.

1. The high tie is when one or two panels are hung in the window. The tie pulls the panel back above the centreline of the window.

2. The middle tie pulls the panel back at a point near the middle of the curtain. It looks best if it is not done at the exact centre, but either slightly above or slightly below the centre.

3. The low tie pulls the curtain back about three-fourths of the distance from the top to the floor.

4. The centre tie gathers one or two curtains and pulls them together in the vertical centre of the window, about two thirds or three fourths of the distance from the top to the bottom.

5. The crisscrossed tie starts with two overlapping panels hanging the full width of the window. The outer panel is pulled back to one side and the inner curtain is pulled back to the opposite side.

6. The angled tie uses either one or two curtains. The panel is pulled partially back in the high tie position and pulled back more closely to the window casing in the bottom tie position. The panel is tied back twice in such a way that it is hung in a pleasing, billowing angle from one top corner of the window to a point below the opposite side of the window.

Formal and informal styles

Curtains can be as varied as the individuals in whose homes they hang. Even with all of the variety in fabrics, colours, lengths and methods of hanging, all curtain styles can be classified as either formal or informal.

Formal window treatments are usually called draperies and hang in layers. They are most often found in formal parlors or sitting rooms, living rooms and formal dining rooms. The window treatment is usually done in two or three layers. The first layer is the sheer, which is often a single panel of sheer linen or lace that admits diffused light into the room. Sheers also tend to obscure visibility from the outside, especially if the lighting in the room is subdued. The second layer is usually the pleated floor length drapes. The drapes are suspended from traverse if they are intended to be opened and closed. Drapes are hung from above the window and cover the side casing and trim of the window as they fall toward the floor. The third layer is the curtain running across the window top and covers the top of the window casing, trim and the heading of the draperies. Draperies and valances are often lined. Draperies may be below sill length although they are often floor length.

Everything else is informal curtains, usually hung in one or two layers. They are seldom lined, and are used to diffuse light, not to block it out.

Curtains are decorative, but have other uses as well, aside from providing privacy. They are useful in room darkening to protect room contents from the adverse effects of the sun’s UV rays. Sunlight can fade the colors in furniture and carpet fabrics. Lined curtains are especially good for protecting furniture and carpeting near windows facing either to the south or to the west.

Sheer Curtains - Leaving Nothing To The Imagination

Most people put up curtains by their windows for the purpose of privacy. Even the most social individuals need to be able to do things in their house by themselves, without the intrusion of the outside world. A regular curtain will provide this privacy, and prevent people outside from seeing everything you do in your house.

However, there are people who just love to be the center of attention at all times, no matter what they are doing. Their pleasure seems to be in having an audience watch their every move, even in the most private rooms of their house. This is why sometimes you will see a house with very sheer curtains put up, even in the bedroom window. The homeowner is probably one of those people who thrive on being in the limelight.

If you want to use curtains for privacy, sheer curtains are definitely not the way to go. Sheer curtains provide very little, if any, amount of privacy. Some of these curtains are so translucent that people passing by can see everything you are doing. For most of the people who use sheer curtains, this is exactly the point. They derive pleasure from being able to share their most intimate rituals with anyone who wants to watch.

Different people definitely have different beliefs and preferences. While voyeurism is not for everybody, there is really nothing wrong with it. However, people who use sheer curtains in their house must also exercise discretion in certain situations. For example, there may be young children around who are not supposed to see what they are doing. In these cases, they might have to temporarily replace their sheer curtains with more opaque drapes.

Although there are people who do like using sheer curtains for a kinky purpose, it not the sole use of these almost transparent curtains. People who live in high-rise apartments may also use sheer curtains, but their purpose would not be to entertain voyeurs, as nobody will be standing outside their 10th floor window watching their private activities.

No matter what you use them for, sheer curtains are definitely an unusual kind of curtain, and putting them up in your home or apartment surely adds a touch of your personality to your house.

A Brighter Cellar

If you are planning to renovate your cellar into a living space then you are probably aware that the windows you have are too small to make a difference. Many people do not mind an enclosed space if it is well lit, but most people appreciate a window to the outside world or at least the illusion of one.

Since the cellar concrete block walls have to be covered with sheet rock, it presents a perfect opportunity to create a window with daylight streaming into the room. By placing the wall two feet into the room, the space can be used for a niche, storage cabinets, book shelves and a window. As for losing two feet of room space, the inset can be configured to square off a too long room and the convenience of extra storage space is important. The space behind the wall makes it easy to run electric wiring, speaker wires and telephone connections.

A standard sash window can be used or better, a diamond paned picture window. Provision must be made to be able to enter the space for maintenance. To the left and right of the window, two double tube florescent fixtures with special daylight balanced tubes will shine on a curved panel of thin sheet rock. The top third of the reflecting panel can be painted a light sky blue and the lower two thirds a pale grass green. Creative types may consider painting a garden scene or a quiet lake view.

As an alternative to plain glass panes, stained glass or plastic patterned panels can be inserted behind the glass for a more decorative look. A dimmer switch can be mounted on the wall for ambiance lighting. Different Ways to Accessorize Your Curtains

Window treatments can speak volumes about the mood of a room. They can hang freely, or be tied back in a variety of ways. They can be informal and casual or formal and polished. Knowing the differences can help you decide which look is best for your home.

Tying back curtains above the halfway point of a window is called a “high tie”. Curtains tied with a middle tie are tied back at two opposite sides at the center of the window. The low tie is used to secure a curtain about three-quarters of the way down. Sometimes a center tie is used, which brings the drape into the center of the window, generally toward the lower part, and tied with a ribbon or tie back. The criss-cross tie is used when two overlapping panels are each pulled back to the opposite sides of the window. Depending on the fabric they’re tying back, all of these tie back options can give a formal or casual look to a room.

The tie backs themselves can also make an impact, and change the feel of a window treatment. You can tie back with ribbon, satin tassels or fabric that matches the curtains. You can also use metal U-shaped hardware that is affixed to the wall. The curtains are simply tucked into the U and arranged to create a pleasing appearance.

Though choices for window treatments are endless, most curtain styles fall under two categories: formal or casual.

Formal window treatments, called “draperies”, are generally hung in layers, with panels, shades or blinds under heavier panels. The panel is generally a light-diffusing lace or sheer linen, topped by a heavier pleated drape, which usually hangs to the floor. They’re hung from a curtain rod, and may be opened by a cord pulley mechanism. These may be topped by a valance across the top of the window. This covers any hardware or rods, and gives a finished look to the window. These are usually found in formal living rooms or dining rooms, and have become less common with the advent of more casual, usable living spaces and easy-care home design options.

All other types of window coverings are informal. They may employ one or two layers, and aren’t usually lined. These types of curtains are lighter in appearance, and can be used to dress a window up or down.

Whichever window treatments you choose, you’re sure to find that the way you accessorize them is just as important.

Prestige Blinds: Why Panel Tracks Are A Great Alternative

When dressing a window in your home you should consider all the available alternatives, whether curtains, panel track blinds or vertical blinds.

Amongst the various choices you have to give your windows some privacy or to shade the bright sun, panel track blinds are a great alternative to consider. As many people are put off by the difficulty of installing vertical blinds, curtains are becoming obsolete. This is why you should really consider panel track blinds.

For a low cost they will give your home a great design touch that is suitable for many rooms and very easy to use. These blinds can really add to your home décor in many ways. For instance you can use them as part of your overall design scheme to anchor the look of the room or you can give a room an air of romance as they soften the light. Whatever the feature you are after, their ease of use compared to vertical blinds should make panel track blind a very solid contender when considering your options.

What Panel Track Blinds Have To Offer

By the simple way they are constructed, panel track blinds offer many options for your home. For instance, if you have a very large window in one of your rooms it can be impractical and very costly to install drapes. What would be a difficult DIY project becomes a very straightforward job with panel tracks, even if the expanse of window to dress is significant.

One of the great things with panel track blinds is the vast variety of materials on offer. For instance you will find some that are made of woven woods, such as bamboo, yarns and various other types of woods that can give a room an exotic look. They come in 16 weaves. There are also solar blinds that are made of woven PVC, poly or fiberglass: this particular type of track panels can instantly give your room a very modern, contemporary look. Another great feature to look for in panel tracks is that they are available in many colors. For a more industrial look, you can chose woven fiberglass panels with a vinyl coating. All in all there are very many options to choose from to add a touch of prestige to your home.

Another great advantage if the panel track blinds over other window dressing option is how easy they are to use. They make a grand design statement in any room and their graceful, elegant style will help transform the space into a beautiful room. For great results you should always take your time when selecting the color and material that will work best with your room décor and the wood of your windows. A fine quality product is always a good investment for your home.

Drapery Fabric Enhances Your Window Architectural Style In Any Room In Your Home

Hanging drapery fabric to your living or dining room windows will add style, control light, and enhance or obscure a view. Drapery panels are usually more formal in appearance, and are mostly heaver than curtain fabric. Typically lined, pleated, and floor-length, drapery curtains are attach by hooks to a decorative rod, and some sort of cord device that hangs behind either the left or right of the drapery panel. Choose complementary treatments in rooms that open to one anther or that share the same style furniture.

If your window styles and sizes vary within a room, use the same fabric but in different fabrications, such as classic swags and draperies. The styles and colors you wear may reveal the color you’re most comfortable living in. Whatever your style preference, don’t let your window treatment’s form obstruct its function. In formal room, choose full, flowing window treatments that complement the fabrics of the furnishings. Use pattern or color to transform a window into a formal point.

For starters, window treatment doesn’t have to be fabric. Either way, don’t overfill the room with fabrics; “less is more” in the design scheme. Choosing the right drapery fabric can make all the difference in fashioning great treatments. There are many ways of hanging sheer drapes, conventionally with a casing or eyelets, or you can use a gathered heading tape with a track or pole. Tall windows in high-ceiling room are perfect candidates for classic drapery and valance treatments.

So before you choose a window covering, consider the way your window open and close. Whatever type of curtain or drapery you select, how you top it and tie it back can have a major impact on your design schemes. Combination treatments give you freedom to manipulate the apparent size and shape of your windows. For the most pleasing look, choose drapery fabric that matches the degree of custom in each room.

A Commentary on Curtains

Once upon a time, window coverings served more purposes than just being decorative. They were used to block light, cold and heat. With the advent of better window technology, they became less utilitarian, more ornamental window coverings.

For some, the terms “curtains” and “drapes” are used interchangeably, but there is a difference. Drapes are the more formal of the two. They’re generally floor-length and use a rod and hook system. Pulling a cord opens and closes them. Curtains, on the other hand, are more informal. They’re generally on a rod as well, but they’re opened and closed by pulling the fabric into position.

The three types of these window treatments, panel, café and tiered each serve a different purpose in home design.

1) The panel type is simply fabric attached to a tension rod by hooks, rings or tabs. They can hang from a rod at or near the top of the window. They’re generally seen in all rooms in the house, except the kitchen. You might see them paired with blinds or sheers for a more complete look.

2) The café type is hung from a rod that bisects the window horizontally. This way, the upper half of the window is bare. You’ll generally see these in a kitchen or casual dining area.

3) The tiered type is somewhat of a combination between the panel and the cafe. Think of it as a café on the bottom with a valance on top. The valance is made of the same material as the cafe, and tapers down on each side, to overlap the sides of the lower café portion.

There are three basic lengths.

1) The sill length hangs just to the windowsill. It can start at café height or panel height.

2) The below-the-sill length is exactly that: it hangs to just below the lower casing of the window.

3) The floor length hangs just above the floor.

They’re also available in lined or unlined styles. They can serve as a barrier to cold and/or light. They can have a third layer, called an “interlining”, which is designed to help keep out the cold when installed on drafty windows.

Most people think of them as a home design accent, but there are many other uses for window coverings. They help keep the sun and its penetrating rays from adversely affecting furnishings and hardware. They also provide privacy.

Now that you have an idea of these types of window treatments and their individual features and benefits, you can concentrate on choosing the styles and colors that work for you.

Being really interested in window coverings, Kenneth Morris has been editing plenty of publications on this particular subject. From his writings on window coverings and curtains the writer showed his experience in the field.

Sheer Curtains

To highlight big windows and soften the sun's rays, a sheer curtain is your best option. Sheers have been used for many years. Besides their practical use, sheers will also add character to your room.

This lightweight curtain can be used alone or with another heavier fabric. The usage depends on the amount of sunlight you want to let into the room, for instance, if you want a warm room with lots of sunlight flooding in, you would use only the sheer curtain. If you decided to go only with sheer, you could make them three times the width of your window. The gathers will give you your privacy.

You could also get a little creative and leave the top part of your window open. You will still have your privacy but at the same time, the sunlight entering from the top of the window will brighten up your room dramatically.

Sheer curtains are the perfect choice if you have indoor plants, especially orchids. This curtain will protect your plants from the sun's rays yet give them enough sunlight to keep them alive.

Sheers are cheap to buy and relatively easy to maintain. Most of them are made of synthetic materials and unless otherwise stated, you can wash them just as you would wash lace curtains.

If your sheers are dirty, soak them overnight (not more than 12 hours) in warm soap water with a couple of spoonfuls of borax or ammonia. After this, rinse them thoroughly to get rid of the soap and hang them out to dry. If you have organdy sheers don not wash them at home. They are very delicate and detergents will harm them. You will have to dry-clean them.

Silhouette Window Coverings Create A Variety Of Moods

Silhouette window shadings from Hunter Douglas feature soft fabric vanes suspended between sheer fabric facings. This remarkable window covering not only controls light at the window, but also enhances it - filtering out its damaging effects, while maximizing its potential in interiors by subtly manipulating it. As the light enters the room, it is diffused by the two layers of sheer fabric and gentle curve of the fabric vanes. A warm, clear shadow-free light inside that also softens the view to the outside and obscures the view into the home. The vanes can be tilted for subtle changes in light and closed for privacy.

Needless to say, Silhouette window shadings can create a variety of moods in a room and provide UV protection without compromising the light or view. Kenneth Brown, one of the West Coast's most successful designers, favors this product's clean, tailored look. And, Silhouette window shadings recently got even better. Silhouette® Top-Down / Bottom-Up shadings with the TiltAnywhere™ feature can open from the top down or from the bottom up or both ways at the same time. The TiltAnywhere feature allows the vanes to be tilted when the shading is in any position for a full range of light control and privacy.

In June of 2007, the Silhouette Shade is now available in a 4" vane size which includes a fabric covered headrail due to the box enclosure being slighter bigger than the 2" and 3". Artscape Window Coverings - The Formal And Informal

The formally treated window covering is conventionally made up of about two to three layers. The initial layer is usually known as the casement curtain and is mounted at the trim area of the window. The common materials used are the lace panel or solid panel that gathers at the top of the window trim. The second layer is comprised of the draperies. These artscape window covering layers function to cover both the window frame and the trim. The third layer is more of optional wherein the addition of the valance is featured. It also goes through the name of cornice. It normally comes as made up of wood material and the covering is either some type of fabric or upholstery.

The Informal Window Treatment and Artscape Window Coverings

The informal window treatment with artscape window coverings is only comprised of two layers. This somewhat enhances the privacy of the household residents. One may opt not to employ the layers at all so that a full view of the outside would be easily enjoyed. More so, if you have less draperies of artscape window coverings to use, there would be lesser maintenance drills to perform.

The Window Drapes and the Lining of the Curtain

Whether you would opt for the informal or formal drape covering or curtains, you still have to determine the kinds of lining that you would like to use. The key factors that you would need to consider are the duration of time that is required for the arrangement and the amount of the natural light that you want to get into your room. The unlined drapes or window coverings typically disperse the daylight. The selection of unlined window covering materials involve the mobile, lace, sheers, silk, cotton, organza, and Muslim.

The Lined Window Coverings

The lined curtains or draperies are equipped with a lot more body that endows deeper and yet softer folds. These elements add more to the pleasing appearance of the artscape window coverings. The lining also strengthens the window covering's resistance to fading and the common sun damages. The most popular lining of the window coverings are color white or off white because they easily blend with the dominant color of the draperies. More so, the artscape window coverings are typically sold everywhere and you too could easily access the manufacturing agents of your chosen design. Why spend more if you could always get the best and practical deals for the artscape window covering?

Go Green With Energy Efficient Window Blinds

Concern about our environment is certainly a growing concern. But, hitting home more directly, for many families, is the ever-rising costs of energy. If you live in a cold climate you are probably feeling the pinch of rising fuel oil costs. I lived in New Hampshire for many years and I was acutely aware of this. It seemed that every winter the prices just kept going up. But it is not just cold climates and seasons where rising energy costs are an issue. Cooling your home is more expensive too.

There are ways to dramatically improve the energy efficiency of your home and one of them is with the right types of window blinds and shades. One of the best types of window treatments for insulation is cellular shades, also called cell shades and honeycomb shades. They come in single, double and triple cells. The triple cell shades offer the greatest level of insulation both for hot and cold weather.

There are other choices. Many types of window treatments and coverings now offer significant energy efficiency so you are not stuck with only one choice. For example, may manufacturers of window blinds and shades offer insulated roman shades. This is usually an option that gets added on to the style you choose but, some come this way right from the factory.

Another choice, for those who want the benefits of cellular shades, but the look of drapery-style fabrics, should consider insulating roman panel shades. Panel shades are also called panel track blinds and sliding window panels. Panel shades have overlapping fabric panels on a wheeled track system, something akin to vertical blinds.

Another idea is to maximize the sun's heat with solar shades, or sheer shades. With these window shades you can make use of the natural light during daylight hours. Most solar shades and sheer shades offer the privacy you desire but still allow the sunlight to warm you room's interior.

Aside from energy-efficient cellular shades, roman shades or panel shades, you can also insulate your home by using weather-stripping to seal windows and doors. Also try placing foam draft blockers behind electrical cover plates. You may also want to use insulation to wrap your water heater and water pipes, preventing heat loss during transfer.

While I am on the subject of energy efficiency, I would remind you that one of the simplest things you can do to save energy is replace your regular light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs (CFLs). CFLs will last up to ten times longer than regular light bulbs, while using only 1/4 of the energy! Many manufacturers offer CFLs that are warmer in color and look very much like regular bulbs. They can save energy and showcase your interior design style at the same time.

All of these things I have mentioned, especially the window shades and blinds are not exactly cheap. But, they will pay off in the long run. Sometimes, we just don't have the money to make our homes as energy efficient as we'd like. I certainly understand this dilemma. If you are in this situation, consider purchasing one piece at a time, over many months, even years. That is what I did while living in the Northeast. I lived in one of those old New England homes with like 50 windows. There was no way I could buy cellular shades for the entire house all at once. So, I started slow and purchased shades for the living room, then the bedrooms and so on.

It is important to note that pleated blinds or shades do not offer the same insulation as cellular shades even though they look similar. Good luck and stay warm! - David Brooks

How to Make a Roman Shade

The simple yet elegant Roman shade is a favored window treatment in many countries and in many styles of house. It is easy to construct and can be as decorative or plain as you wish. The Roman shade is made up of several parts: the cloth panel, the lift cord, the drop cord, the lifting mechanism and the head rail. In its simplest terms, here’s how a Roman shade works: The lift cord is fastened to the bottommost ring in each column of rings then threaded through the balance of the rings, through the same side-pulley, across the mounting board and out one side of the shade. The shade is lifted by pulling on the lift cord.

The lifting mechanism may be as simple as a screw eye, a pulley, a cord lock pulley or a continuous or clutch system. The fabric of choice is 100% cotton and a lining should be used for sheer or lightweight fabrics. Upholstery weight fabrics don’t do well as Roman shades.

Measure and Design: The shades may be mounted inside window frame, outside the window frame or as a hybrid. The mounting board can be placed either flat or projected for each of the above mountings. Measure the length, width and depth of the window, allowing for hems and seams. Determine the amount of stackage desired. Stackage is the width of the folded panels of the shade when the shade is in the open position. Plan the number of folds, which will appear in the finished product. This will determine the number of screw eyes required for the lift lines.

Tools: Two groups of tools are needed: Fabric measuring and cutting tools -- a cutting mat, an aluminum rules, a quilter’s ruler, a steel tape measure, marking pins, a seam ripper, a rotary cutter, fabric shears and a carpenter’s square.

Mounting board-manufacturing tools – A screwdriver, a hacksaw, an ice pick, a hammer, wire cutters, a C-clamp, a staple gun, a metal file and a hand saw.

Manufacture: Cut fabric panels for the shade and the lining. Hem the bottom of the two together. Sew side seams of the fabric and the lining together so the panel is finished along both sides and the hem edge. The panel is like a pillowcase at this point. Glue the battens—wood or plastic strips to stiffen the panel—in place at each planned fold line on the inside (hidden) of the panel. Mark and sew lift rings in place at every-other batten. Attach the head rail to the shade using Velcro. Thread the lift cord from the bottom-most lift ring up through all the rings, across the top of the head rail and then down beside (not through) the lift rings on the opposite side. Cut and install the weight rod along the bottom of the panel.

Mounting: Place the mounting board in position on the wall, using screws. Thread all cords in place. Make sure the cords pull correctly, lifting the entire panel smoothly. Loosely braid the lift cords together and finish with a knot in below the cord.

Car Window Tint In 15 Simple Steps

Car window tints offers privacy and UV protection, but assess your skills before taking on this project yourself: At the very least, you'd better be good at measuring and cutting. This is a precision job but can be done by almost everybody.

Instructions

1: For car window tint in 15 steps you will need the following tools and materials:

tinting film, an X-Acto knife, razors, a blow dryer or heat gun, 4-inch squeegees, small sponges, a 4-inch hard card , a bone tool, and a spray bottle filled with a mixture of dishwashing soap and water.

2: Cut the film in the shape of the windows. Set cutouts aside on a glass board or an area devoted to cut film. This can be done easily by using the outside of the car window as a template.

3: Spray the side window with the soap and water mixture.

4: Use a razor to go over the side window to remove any residue.

5: Use a 4-inch squeegee to get rid of any residue from top to bottom. Paste the residue out of the film.

6: Apply the tint to the side window. Leave 1/4 inch to 1/16 inch from the top edge of the window without tint. This will be covered when the window and door are closed. This step is very important with car window tint in 15 steps

7: Push the tint below the inner rubber seals of the window.

8: Use the card to make sure that the tint goes into all the corners.

9: Take a blow dryer in one hand and a squeegee in the other, and heat from the top on one side, working the tint with the squeegee on the other side in a horizontal motion. This should get out any remaining moisture from between the film and glass. This ensures that the film is cleanly stuck.

10: Use the same system to apply the tint film to the front window.

11: Follow steps 3 and 5 in applying the film to the back window.

12: Count the number of defroster heater lines on the back window.

13: Cut the rear window film into the required number of panels.

14: Place the first panel on the bottom, the second panel on top of the first, the third panel on top of the second and so on. Identify the heater line where two panels overlap.

Panel Track Blinds, a Fashionable Alternative to Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are the ubiquitous solution for sliding doors and large picture windows. Almost every house or apartment I ever rented had vertical blinds. They look fine, but they lack style and originality. A relatively new choice is available: Panel track blinds, which are also called slider panels or panel tracks. They are much more sophisticated looking and can lend a modern, designer-look to your home.

Panel tracks are essentially overlapping fabric panels that glide on a wheeled track system. The panels range in width from approximately 48” to 192” and in lengths to fit most windows and sliding doors. The panels, which are obviously wider then most vertical blind panels, are composed of fabric, woven wood or a solar screen material. If you want a warmer, natural look go with one of the woven wood materials. The choices here are very similar to bamboo shades or woven wood shades with materials like, bamboo, grasses, matchstick, or a combination. The fabric panel options are numerous. You can choose from sheer shades that let in light or darker fabrics that provide more privacy, all in a variety of colors. The solar screen material options, similar to sheer shades, are usually translucent, providing see-through as well as solar protection. This is an especially good option for large windows with views. The solar screens come in different levels of opacity from 3% to about 14%.

Panel track blinds can even be used as an affordable room divider. This is a very cool option. I have seen this done in small rooms and large rooms, even in office settings as an alternative to cubicles. This is also an excellent option for lofts which tend to have very open floor plans. You can even buy different panels for different seasons or when redecorating. It’s very easy to swap out the panels. The possibilities are numerous.

Panel tracks are more expensive the vertical blinds, so this is not a truly fair one-to-one comparison. But most vertical blinds are just vinyl, which is very cheap, whereas panel tracks are made with more expensive materials. But the finished look is much, much better. A well chosen panel track blind, in a color and material that really suits the décor, can lend a level of sophistication that traditional vertical blinds can’t match.

One additional benefit is the hardware that comes with panel tracks, a wheeled track system that glides almost effortlessly. This is a very nice high-quality touch and very different from many cheap vertical blinds which can be a bit clunky. When opening these blinds the panels simply roll back overlapping each other.

One limitation of panel track blinds, one that can be minimized, is that when you fully open the panel blinds, more of the window will be covered because of the larger width of the panels as compared to traditional vertical blinds. This is true of vertical blinds as well because of the stacking that occurs, especially on large sliding windows.

Vertical blinds will always be popular. But, if you want to try something more fashionable, and have a little more money to spend, go with panel track blinds. – David Brooks

Solar Window Heater: South Facing Savings

I recently discovered an inexpensive, eco-friendly product to supplement your home heating system. It's a compact, but efficient, solar powered room heater designed to be installed in the south facing rooms of your house or apartment.

Since it's powered by the sun, and heats with hot air, the only mechanical or moving part is a simple fan that draws room temperature air into the heating panel through a series of heating channels, and then exhausts the heated air back into the room.

The basic solar window heater is 20" x 32" x 3.5" and framed in clear pine for painting or staining. Think of it as a box with an aluminum panel (collector) behind a sheet of air tight Plexiglas on the outside, and a sheet of thin wood on the inside to trap the collected heat.

Within the box are two baffles configured to look like a maze. This allows for a continuous stream of air to be heated as it is drawn through the box by the fan.

The aluminum collector panel is finished in flat black to maximize heat absorption from the sun. On a day with full sun, the panel will reach temperatures of 140 - 170 degrees.

A newer version of the solar window heater replaces the aluminum panel with high quality copper, also finished in flat black.

Located inside the panel is a thermostat switch. When the temperature of the heated air reaches 120 degrees, the switch automatically turns on the fan. When the air temperature cools to 90 degrees or less, the fan shuts itself off.

The small, efficient fan will move 102 cubic feet of air per minute or about 6,000 cubic feet per hour. The cost of electricity to operate the fan is around $3.00 per year.

The basic model sells for around $150.00. The newer, copper lined solar window heater sells for an additional $10.

The electrical components are available separately for $42.95. They include the fan, thermostat, junction control box and transformer. If you're handy, you could probably build your own solar window heater for around $80.

Types of Window Covering Treatments

Selecting the right window treatments for your home can often be a matter of simple and practical common sense. The right window treatments are first and foremost affordable to your budget. Second, they will suit your taste. Third, they will suit the overall style of the room in which you will be using them.

You should decide whether to use formal or casual window coverings in your home. Informal window treatments are often warmer and compliment mission style furniture quite nicely. More formal window treatments work wonderfully with Victorian styled furniture. The architecture of your home may also have a tremendous effect on the window treatments you choose. Tall windows are much better suited to long flowing swags, for instance, than short windows.

Another method for determining the proper window treatment for your home is by going room to room and deciding what will work best with the windows and the décor of each room. More formal window treatments are appropriate for living rooms or dining rooms while family rooms might look better with more casual or informal window treatments. For rooms in which you’d like a great deal of sun exposure, perhaps a sheer or transparent window treatment is in order. This works great for sunrooms that are also living spaces in your home. For your kitchen, you should probably elect window treatments that will withstand humidity and moisture while remaining easy to clean.

It is important to consider price when planning your window treatments. More formal window treatments tend to carry a much more formal price tag. Part of the reason for the added price is that fact that these window treatments typically consist of quite a few layers. Formal window treatments generally include a sheer under layer that hangs from the top of the window, a layer of drapery made from a heavier more substantial material, and a possible valance or cornice of some sort.

In contrast, casual window treatments typically consist of two layers of fabric, which makes them far less costly than most formal window treatments.

Use Tiebacks to Change the Look of Your Curtains

You can change the look of your curtains in a number of ways. Depending Upon the color or fabric of your curtains, you obtain a completely different look. The way you hang your curtains can also change the decor, as can the use of tiebacks. You can make a complete change in your curtain's appearance through the use of tiebacks. There are different ways to put tiebacks on your curtains, and they all depend on where you put the tiebacks. We will discuss all of them here.

1. The High Tie is used with at least two panels, and the ties are put way up on each panel to create an open appearance.

2. The Middle Tie is used at approximately the middle of the curtain panels. It is not exactly centered at the middle, but placed a little below or above.

3. The Low Tie is the opposite of the High Tie, placed below the center mark of the curtain.

4. The Center Tie is placed at the exact center of the curtain, where the panels are pulled back.

5. The Crisscrossed Tie is used with overlapping curtain panels. The panel on the outside is pulled to one side while the panel on the inside is pulled to the other side.

6. The Angled Tie can be used with one or two curtains. When one curtain is used, the curtain is tied high up on the window, and then the opposite side is tied back much lower. It is then puffed out to create a billowy efffect.

Using any of these methods does not mean that you are limiting yourself to a certain kind of decorating. All of these methods can be used with either formal or informal styles.

Formal decorating is usually found in living rooms and formal dining rooms and usually heavier materials with formal patterns are used in conjunction with a set of sheer curtains. This layered look is what gives the formal style its unique charm. The first layer is sheer curtains, made of a light fabric such as linen, lace or polyester nylon. These sheer curtains diffuse the light from the outside, yet let some light in while the drapes are open, while they afford some privacy as well. The next layer used in this look is the drapery layer. This layer is heavier fabric that hangs to the floor (although some styles stop at just past the bottom of the window frame) from a traverse rod that serves to pleat the drapes for a soft, draped look. The drapes can be opened during the day and closed at night.

Usually drapes are hung above the window frame and fall along the side of it, completely obscuring the frame. The third layer is a valance. This goes horizontally across the top of the draperies, covering the traverse rod. In a formal decorating style, the drapes and valance are usually lined for insulation and to give a heavier appearance.

The informal style is comprised of lighter curtains that just add a touch of color or pattern to the window, and do not serve the main purposes of blocking out the light. They can be in both one or two layers, and are not lined.

Discovering Sheer Horizontal Window Shadings

The interest in Sheer Horizontal Window Shadings has risen enormously over the last few years. With the ever growing trend to research and purchase home furnishing products online, companies like Ace of Shades Window Coverings experience daily targeted traffic and inquiries about this unique product. Sheer Horizontal Blinds are an elegant way to dress ones window, combining the functionality of a blind, the operation of a shade, and the feel of a drape.

The originator of this sophisticated window shading is Hunter Douglas, who is today’s leader in the blind and window covering industry. Because Hunter Douglas has restrictions on selling and purchasing Sheer Horizontals through the internet, most online retailers have opted to offer similar products by other major manufactures like Comfortex. Comfortex has been a major player in the industry for over 20 years and is now owned by Hunter Douglas. Its version of a Sheer Horizontal Blind is the Shangri-La Window Shadings.

The construction of Sheer Horizontal Blinds is clever and unique. Woven fabric vanes seem to float between two layers of sheer knit fabric that offer a soft view outside. When the fabric vanes are in the open position, light is gently filtered into the room, creating a warm, soft glow. The incoming light can be perfectly controlled by closing the vanes to create privacy inside a room. Even with the vanes in the open position furnishings, art, and wooden floors are protected from harmful UV rays. The sleek headrail is designed to hide the entire fabric for a completely unobstructed view when the product is raised. Shangri-La Sheer Horizontals are available in 2” or 3” vane size. They offer light-filtering or light-dimming materials with a great range of colors and different style fabrics. A continuous cordloop with clutch system is standard for smooth operation on small or large shades. For out of reach windows there is even a motorized version available. The maximum dimensions for a Shangri-La by Comfortex is 114” in width and 132” in length.

Sheer Horizontals have a pleasing effect in any surrounding. They work beautifully with contemporary or formal décor and contrast naturally in rustic or traditional décor. Enhancing the interior of our home can affect and change our mood and can improve the quality of life. Sheer Horizontals truly deserve the attention they have been getting.

Replace GM Window Regulator

Don't pay $250-$500 to Fix a broken Auto Electric Window Regulator!

How to replace your GM automobile electric window regulator and save hundreds of dollars and time:

Have you ever had to replace one of your Electric Window Regulators? You're driving along and the window suddenly drops down a few inches, or all the way down. This problem has occurred on my GM vehicles (Buick, Pontiac) so much I carry a roll of blue tape (Generally used for masking doing painting) in my trunk.

I have saved customers and myself $100's of dollars. Our publication is written for the GM automobiles.

Update. Two windows in my Buick stopped working this past week. I was able to fix them for $100's less than what the dealer quoted.

The basic steps to replacing the regulator are:

Remove the door panel. Locate the various screws holding the panel, take a screwdriver and pry the door panel off. There are plastic pins all around the door. Some will break, don't worry you can purchase new clips at an auto parts store like Auto Zone.

Don't forget to disconnect any electric connectors for the windows, power locks etc.

Once you get the door panel off, you can see the glass. Pull the glass up to the top of the doorframe, use your blue masking tape and drape it over the doorframe and both sides of the window.

The window regulator is attached to two clamps on the bottom of the window. Take out the screws. Remove the screws holding the regulator onto the doorframe. Remove the regulator and motor attached. (If your motors bad, you can just replace the motor, but I found for a few more dollars I could replace the whole regulator and motor.)

Reverse the process to install the new regulator. Other Automotive Tips

Window Curtains

Your windows can be a cut above the rest with the right kind of dressing. Whether it's more light you want or more privacy, you must choose the right kind of window treatment. If you have a window, you must dress it up. There are many aspects to be considered though. You could dress it up using drapes, valances, awnings, sheers or even blinds. You could decorate your windows with rich brocades and tapestries; or make your room warm with velvet and wool; or you could give an airy touch to the room with lace and cottons.

However, you must choose window treatments that compliment the style of décor in your home. Set the mood in your room with the right kind of window treatment. Go for either a formal look or a casual one. For a luxurious look, go for a formal treatment with floor-length drapes. Layer them with sheer underneath. Finish it off with a top treatment. This kind of window dressing looks great in rooms with high ceilings and tall windows. You could also settle for a dressed up curtain panel with curtains, giving it a flirty touch with ruffles.

Valances, cornices and awnings can make a huge difference too. Use them alone or in combination with blinds and shades to make your windows more attractive. Add some visual interest to your windows and see what a huge difference that makes. Valance is a fabric that hangs across the top of a window, usually covering a third of the window glass. Often used to hide display hardware, it can be dropped, gathered or pleated. Valances can be used with or without a curtain underneath

Fabric For Window Blinds

Fabrics of all kinds from sheer to opaque are used to make lovely window blinds. The fabric for window blinds can be sheer fabric if the blinds are to cover an entire wall of windows or French doors. Translucent fabric facings and soft fabric vanes are used for such purposes. The use of this kind of fabric lets in light while providing enough privacy by blocking view from the outside.

A wide selection of beautiful fabrics is used for both fabric facings and fabric vanes. Some blinds are constructed in such a manner that when they are fully raised they disappear into a handrail with no part of the blinds or the fabric obstructing the view. Some blinds are manufactured using a multiple number of fabrics. Clever and imaginative mix and match of fabric gives interesting effects to window blinds of this variety.

If the fabric for window binds is carefully chosen, such blinds can provide the elegance of cloth draperies combined with the practical convenience of blinds.

Sheer vertical blinds are made using sheer cloth of various colors to filter in a lot of light minus the glare. These blinds can also be combined with a PVC louver with the sheer fabric running all-round.

Fabric blinds are used to enhance bedroom décor. The use of embellishments and accessories to enhance the overall effect of fabric blinds is also popular. Fringes, pom-poms and ribbons are examples of a few such accessories pressed into use in this manner.

Fabric blinds are constructed using metal or plastic inserts to provide shape to the blinds. The use of these inserts also aids in maneuvering these shades for opening and closing. The durability of fabric blinds depends upon the quality of fabric used for making the blinds. Sheer fabrics look good but are very delicate and may give way at the seams quite early on. Heavier fabrics hold well against seam lines and are able to take the opening and closing process of blinds without much damage. This factor should be kept in mind while choosing fabric for window blinds.

Custom Window Coverings

Custom-made window coverings are now widely available and have become less expensive, so with a little resourcefulness and a lot of creativity, you should be able to have the window covering of your dreams. If your windows are not of standard size or if you want specific colors and materials for your window covering, then now is the perfect time to shop for custom window blinds, shades, shutters, sheers and the like.

Many windows only need a simple aluminum covering. They are inexpensive and have space-age aluminum alloy slat material that is flexible and resistant to kinks and bends. It also has a polyester base paint applied and baked.

You may also choose the vertical window covering that gives the appearance of a drapery. The finely-engineered track allows you to control the amount of light that will pass through its opening. It can be used in both casual and formal furnishings. It is both easy to maintain and to operate, making it a popular choice among buyers.

Specialty vertical window coverings have three categories, the leisure wood faux verticals, the sheer verticals and the real wood verticals.

The leisure wood faux vertical window coverings have rigid and embossed slat materials. The sheer vertical window covering usually has an innovative design and allows privacy and light control. The real wood vertical window coverings are sturdy and beautiful.

Soft sheer window shades are delicate enough to enhance the aesthetics of a room while providing a lot of control over the amount of light and privacy. It combines beauty with practicality.

One of the most popular choices are vinyl window coverings. It offers a superior degree of insulation, much like that of wood window coverings. It is more durable and less maintenance-heavy. Compared with aluminum window frames, vinyl window coverings trap the heat inside during colder seasons and seal the room from heat during warmer times. This type of window covering also works well with most interior designs.

Choosing Formal Or Informal Curtains

When redesigning a room you should always take into account the effect that the window coverings can have on your overall look. A careful choice of color and material in curtains can completely change the style and feel of your windows. The way curtains hang is another factor that can change your home design. Curtain tie backs can be a great detail, and you will probably be surprised how many different positions of tieback there are to be used in giving your curtains a completely unique look.

The type of tie back depends on the way the curtains are hanging. The following types are for standard curtains where one or more panels hang straight down from a rail or pole. The high tie style is when the curtain panels are pulled back to the edge of the window by a tie back positioned above the horizontal centerline of the window. Similarly, the middle tie gathers the curtain panel at around the center point. This can look oddly symmetrical if located right at the centre so should preferably be slightly higher or lower to achieve a good effect.

A low tie pulls the curtain to the window edge about three quarters of the way down to the curtain base. A center tie gathers the curtain panels together in the vertical centre of the window space roughly a quarter or a third from the bottom of the curtain.

If two curtain panels are hung one on top of the other, a crisscrossed tie can be used. To achieve this look the top panel is pulled to the left and secured with a tie, while the inside panel is pulled to the right and fastened in the same way.

The angled tie works best with just one curtain panel covering the window space. The panel is tied loosely in the high tie position, and is then tied more firmly to the edge of the window in the low tie position. This creates a pleasing silhouette against the light coming on through the window.

Curtains are available in both formal and informal styles and choosing the right style for your room can really make your final design come to life. Formal curtains can also be known as draperies and have a number of layers. The layers include a sheer base, often made from very thin lined or lace, heavy, floor length drapes, and a valance that runs across the top of the window and can vary greatly in its complexity. Formal curtains are usually made from a rich material, are heavily lined, and can be found in sitting rooms or dining areas. Informal curtains tend to be just one layer, are often unlined and are used mainly for privacy. They tend to be available in more contemporary colors and designs and are generally less expensive than formal drapes. They are also easier to clean and can often be washed and ironed with your other household linen.
